Tonalist Nightscape Painting, “Horizon” Hudson M. Kitchell c. 1917

Hudson M. Kitchell (1862-1944) is broadly known for this precise type of richly colored evening scene. His method of layering to build a painted surface also resulted in a very distinctive overall fluid-texture.
Also typical for his work (especially those on board) are small gaps in the painted layer. This is the case with this small work on which areas of the primed wooden panel are visible through the gaps.
Period appropriate and likely the original gold art nouveau frame in excellent condition.

A total buyer’s premium of 32% will be added to the hammer price of every lot and is payable by the winning bidder as part of the total purchase price.

The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in perfect condition or completely free from imperfections, wear or effects of aging.
