Engraving: “Insuber” (Northern Italian Horse) c. 1579, Hendrick Goltzius (1558-1617) after Jan Van Der Straet (1523-1605)

“Insuber” (A Northern Italian horse breed) from “Horses from the Stable of Don John of Austria,” Governor-General of the Netherlands from 1576-1578.

A horse, wearing a noseband-less bridle, viewed in profile, looking to the right of the image, standing on a hillside before a river with boats, a castle and trees in the distance, with clouds to the upper right and left corners, the title is lettered at the top center of the image engraving watermark with a fleur de lis and other foliage.

Verso with vertical paper repair with illegible inscription.

CONDITION


Trimmed, center vertical crease with two lighter vertical creases to either side, light rubbing and scattered soiling, paper torn approximately 1 inch at center crease at bottom near horses hooves, paper torn at top margin vertically approximately 1 inch to left of center crease, small tear to paper on horses mane approximately 1/8 inch. Vertical paper repair on center over center crease, visible when held up to light.
