Bamboo walking stick, Kanak people, New Caledonia, 19th-early 20th century..
Engraved with several registers of blackened etched designs that alternate between geometric patterns, natural motifs, scenes of everyday life and – at its bottom – several lines of written script. The nodule at the top of the stick has also been decoratively carved.
Lustrous patina as evidence of age and long use.
Each source documenting this type of form concluded that they disappeared from use by the first quarter of the 20th century.
Stick measures 36″h. When on its custom base it measures 36.5″h x 2.75″w x 2.75″d.

A total buyer’s premium of 32% will be added to the hammer price of every lot and is payable by the winning bidder as part of the total purchase price.
Purchased property must be removed from TA within 14 days of purchase. If the property is not removed within 14 days, TA reserves the right to charge a storage fee of $20 per lot per day.
Property will not be released to the successful bidder until the purchase price has been paid in full. Please note that TA reserves the right to refuse payment from a source other than the buyer of record.
It is the purchaser’s sole responsibility to arrange collection or shipping of the purchased property and to identify and obtain any necessary permits for the lot. TA and the consignor make no representations or warranties as to whether any lot is or is not subject to export or import restrictions or embargoes.
Purchasers are reminded that TA’s liability for loss or damage to sold property shall cease no later than 14 days after the date of the auction.
